சிட்டி ஆஃப் காட் (City of God), பாட்டில் ஆஃப் அல்ஜீயர்ஸ் ( Battle of Algiers)  போன்ற படங்கள் அதன் உச்சத்தை தொட்டவை.

Premalo Padithe - Juxtaposing purity with depravity

IndiaGlitz  [Friday, May 04, 2012]
The strength of Premalo Padithe lies in the climax: Here suspense is neatly unravelled and a love story develops into an immortal affair.  This is a film where two underdogs are at the receiving end of circumstances.  The villains of the piece comprise of an alliance of police-politician-capitalist troika, at the other end of the spectrum are Venu (Sri) and Jyothi (Urmila Mahantha), two poverty-stricken youngsters.  Their lives are shattered by the actions of a lecherous Intermediate student, who doesn't know that they exist on earth.
Venu works for an idli-maker, eats and sleeps by the roadside.  There is Jyothi, who is a domestic servant in an upscale gated community household.  An orphan, Venu sees in Jyothi, a soft-spoken, shy girl, a mother.  He soon falls in love with her.
Even as he trembles at the thought of talking to her, there is an unsavoury story unfolding somewhere and the daughter of Jyothi's owner is at the centre of this story.  Aarthi (Manisha Yadav) has been befriended by Nitesh (Mithun Murali), a spoilt rich son.  After initial reluctance, Aarthi falls into Nitesh's trap and before she realizes, she has gone on an outing with him.  When she comes to know of his true colours, she tries hard to get rid of him.  But that is not to be easy.
Herein lies the crux of the story.  The climax is about how an action of Nitish triggers a set of incidents that are a hard-hitting commentary on the depravity and inhumanity in our society (remember the climax is a real-life incident) and that are a moving portrayal of sacrifice and eternal love.
Venu expresses a lot without uttering much.  The director manages to build a chemistry between the girl and the boy although they don't talk throughout.  In the end, the only sentence he says to her is, "Yennalu aina nee kosam nenu untanu".  In contrast with the pure and innocent world of Venu and Jyothi is that of Nitesh and Aarthi.  Aarthi is not floozy, but she is, like an ordinary middle-class girl, attracted to the charms of costly gadgets and expensive treats.  Nitesh represents the crooked mindset of uncultured youngsters.
Everything said, Premalo Padithe is not very entertaining, although it is aesthetic.  That its nativity is un-Telugu is to state the obvious.  Yes, the director does deal the story with honesty and conviction, but the film cannot be sustained by an exalting climax alone.
The four young actors do justice to their roles in their own way, with Sri emerging as the best one.  Urmila's innocent and homely look is a plus, while Manisha has the right body language to carry her role.  Mithun sounds every bit a soft villain.
Technically, the film's cinematography by Vijay Milton is good, while Prasanna's BG is convincing.  The title song featuring Suresh Kondeti is inappropriate (much like the title) and the makers would do well to remove it urgently.
The climax, for all its complexity and beauty, may not haunt you like the climax of Premisthe.  Watch the film without expectations and you may like it depending on your sensibilities.

Story: Venu (Sri), a worker at a street-side food shop, falls in love with Jothi (Urmila) who works as a maid at Arthi (Manisha)'s house. Meanwhile, Nitesh (Mithun), the school-going son of a minister's concubine, is trying hard to charm Arthi. What happens when Arthi comes to know of his ulterior motive, and how does this affect the lives of Venu and Jothi?

Movie Review: After a mediocre debut with Samurai, Balaji Sakthivelbowled us over with the trendsetting Kadhal. And, then, following the largely over-indulgent exercise that was Kalloori, he has bounced back and how!

Thematically, Premalo Padithe begs comparison with this year's Oscar-winning Iranian film, A Separation, which managed to be a relationship drama, a whodunit and a social commentary, all rolled into one. As in the Iranian film, here too, it is a maid who is victimized, but there all comparison ends.

Unlike the acclaimed Iranian film, in which the morality of the characters remains ambiguous, here we are provided with a set of characters whose motivations are very clear, save one — inspector Kumaravel (Muthuraman), who keeps you guessing about his intentions.

The film begins with his character grilling Jothi, the victim, and gradually unfolds through his interrogations of the prime suspect, Venu, and voluntary witness, Arthi. Throughout, Kumaravel remains a willing listener, always amiable, making the two confide in him without much prodding.Muthuraman plays this part with a deftness that would have one readily believe in his quest for the truth.

Call it nitpicking, but the director could very well have done away with the backgrounder showing how Velu ended up in Chennai. These scenes appear early on in the movie and while they make us empathise with his character, they also give you that uncomfortable feeling that you are in for yet another Angaadi Theru.

Thankfully, the director shifts focus from Venu to his romance, a subject matter which on paper might appear to follow the recent trend of the ragamuffin's courtship of his lady love (who, in fact, thinks he is no more than scum). But, as he did with Kadhal (which could have been summed up as just another rich girl-poor boy romance), the director presents this in a manner that feels very real and refreshing. Impressive, too, is his handling of the other track, between Arthi and Mithun, bringing to the fore the vacuous nature of their relationship.

And, the director is also able to extract wonderful performances from his entire cast. While Sri, as the good-hearted but misunderstood Venu, and Mithun, as the lecherous Nitesh, are totally convincing. But it is Urmila Mahanta's understated performance as Jothi that is the film's pivot.

Until the climax, you only get glimpses of her, in the background or along with the other characters. She rarely speaks in the film but Urmila, with her low key approach, makes sure that you take notice of Jothi every time she is in the frame.

With Kadhal, Balaji seemed to have found his style, which you could call cinema verite and you wouldn't be wrong. He seems to relish making his films look and feel as real as possible and here, his technical team is clearly up to the challenge.

Cinematographer Vijay Milton often takes a fly-on-the-wall approach and that only serves to make the film remarkably direct. And, despite shooting with a digital camera, he nearly manages to replicate the lustre of film using natural light to dazzling effect. The suitably effective score, by guitarist Prasanna (who makes his debut as a film composer), has two heartrending songs sung without any accompaniments which brilliantly underscore the poignant moments of the film.

Premalo Padithe Review _ vazhkku enn telugu

'Premalo Padithe' revitalizes the image of love films in the industry. Watch it for fabulous story, impeccable performances and smart direction.

Balaji Sakthivel definitely has a knack for handling love stories. He's done that in the past and continues to do so. He bowled us over with 'Premisthe' - a heart wrenching film few years back and follows it up with a superior, mature film 'Premalo Padithe (In Telugu) that not only heightens the bar set by the former but also shows the potential of this director who's just four films old.

bollywood
Loosely based on the Iranian film 'A Separation', PP is far from being called a rip-off of the former. Built on relationship drama, whodunit and social annotations, the film revolves around Venu, Jothi, Arthi and Mithun. Venu works at a street-side food stall and falls in love with Jothi, who works as a maid at Arthi's house. Arthi is passionately longed and wooed by Mithun, the son of a local Minister. When Arthi discovers the ulterior motive of Mithun, little did she anticipate the damage it may cause Venu and Jothi. What happens to Venu and Jothi forms the rest of the story.

Unlike 'Premisthe', PP is mature in every other way that you can think of. The film is definitely slow after a point of time nevertheless it is so engrossing; you'd literally succumb to it. Hats off to the director for etching a picture that as realistic as one could imagine. No wonder the audience easily could relate to the characters.

The performances were top class. Although most of the cast was new, one could barely feel that these characters were acting for the first time. Kudos to the director makes these debutant artists literally live in their roles instead of merely acting them. The director handles the helplessness of the school goers and their fascination for cell phones and attraction to each other based on money and lifestyle quite brilliantly. The recklessness, the sadism, the extravagance lifestyle, and elder's guilt in not providing time to children is something that every family relates with. The director once again deserves special appreciation for making each and every one of us in the audience to relate with his characters on-screen.

In one line; PP is the kind of love story we all tend to ignore. It's time to put aside mushy romantic stories for a while and savor a love story that blossoms on the street.

Premalo Padithe Review – Vazhakku Enn 18  9 Tamil Movie Review, Rating, Premalo Padithe Telugu Film Review: Premisthe (Kadhal) fame director Balaji Sakthivel’s latest film Vazhakku Enn 18/9 was produced by director Linguswamy. This was dubbed in Telugu as Premalo Padithe by Suresh Kondeti. Here’s the review…
Listen Review:

Premalo Padithe

Story:

Venu (Sri) is a poor boy who works as a helper at a road side hotel. He falls in love with Jyothi (Urmila Mahantha), who works as servant maid in an apartment. When Venu decides to express his love for Jyothi unexpected things happen and she will be hospitalized and Venu is taken in to police custody. There is another love story in this film between Nitesh (Mithun Murali) and Aarthi (Manisha Yadav). This love story is the root cause for the trouble that has happened in the lives of Venu and Jyothi.

Analysis:

This film has realistic characters that we come across in our daily life. However, the setup doesn’t look fresh as most of the Tamil films these days have been dealing with such backdrops and characters. Director tried to make the narration look interesting by adding crime element. He partly succeeds in it.

First half of the film is very boring and uninteresting. The scenes between Venu and Jyothi don’t have the spark to excite the audience. Narration is very flat until interval and later the pace picks up with addition of contemporary elements like making MMS videos of teenage girls.

These scenes are poorly done and the film runs on a dull note. Slow screenplay has been one of the biggest problems for this film. Interesting things happen in the pre climax scenes and like every Tamil film, it ends on a tragic note. It is high time that Tamil filmmakers realize that they are being extremely monotonous. This type of tragic films might work with Tamil audience. Our audiences are no longer interested to watch Tamil flavored tragic romantic tales.

Performances:

This film is made with newcomers and they have done a pretty decent job. Urmila who played Jyothi delivered a superb performance. Sri is perfect in the role of a slum boy.

Technicalities:

Vazhakku Enn 18/9 is made on a low budget. But the quality of the film is very good. Cinematography stands out. Background score is nice. Editing is adequate. Director Balaji Shaktivel’s direction is decent, but there are many problems with the script, which lacks commercial appeal. Balaji previously made Premisthe on same lines and now he adds a crime element to that age old love story. Freshness is missing in this film. Entertainment is non existent.

Final Word:

If you like films with tragic endings then you may give a try at your leisure. Majority of Telugu audience like to watch entertaining films and therefore the success of this film remains doubtful. This film doesn’t have much to please the audience who watch out for feel good films. It may work in Tamil, but in Telugu, Premalo Padithe needs very good word of mouth to survive for few days.
