A biopic based on the life of army athlete-turned-dacoit Paan Singh Tomar won the best National Film Award in the 2012 awards list announced here on Monday. The award meant that Paan Singh Tomar was the first Hindi movie in eight years to receive the honour. Irrfan Khan won the best actor award for Tomar’s role.
Even as the top honours went to Paan Singh Tomar, several meaningful films from south India bagged other awards.
Vazhakku Enn 18/9 won the best Tamil film award, and the best make-up artist award was bagged by Raja for the same film; Vishwaroopam won the best choreography award (Pt Birju Maharaj) and the best production design award (Lalgudi N Ilayaraja). Paradesi bagged the best costume design award (Poornima Ramaswamy).
Malayalam films won 13 awards in different categories. Chittagong (Hindi)  and 101 Chodiyangal (Malayalam) shared the award for the best debut film of a director. Based on the freedom struggle, Chittagong was directed by Bedabrata Pain, while 101 Chodiyangal is based on the special relation between a precocious child and his teacher.
The jury headed by filmmaker Basu Chatterjee chose 38 films from 14 languages for awards in various categories.
The jury conferred joint winners for many categories, thus widening the ambit of the awardees. The jury also awarded the ‘best popular film for providing wholesome entertainment’ to Vicky Donor (Hindi) and Ustad Hotel (Malayalam).
The awards will be given away by President Pranab Mukherjee on May 3

‘Vazhakku Enn 18/9’, released last year, has bagged the award for the Best Tamil Film in the Regional Category of the 60th National Awards announced on Monday. A thrilled Balaji Shakthivel, the film’s director, said, “The award makes me more responsible, and motivates me to make meaningful films in future.” Produced by N Subhash Chandra Bose and Lingu­samy of Thirupathy Brothers, the film unfolds a love story set amidst a horrific tragedy and unforgivable system.
Makeup man Raja has picked up another award for the film, winning the National Award for Best Makeup Artiste.
Kamal Haasan’s magnum opus Vishwaroopam bag­ged two trophies – one for the Best Art Director (N. Ilayaraja) and the other one for the Best Choreography (Pandit Birju Maharaj).
Bala’s Paradesi won the award for Best Costume Designer (Poornima Rama­swamy). Balaji Shakthivel and Raja, along with producer Lingusamy, shared their joy at a hurriedly convened media meet at Four Frames Theater.
“Lingusamy and Bose gave me maximum freedom while making Vazhakku Enn 18/9 which helped me give great output”, said an excited Balaji. He adds, “The award goes to the collective work of the entire team.”
Lingusamy said, “Vazhakku..won all awards in the last one year. It won the best film at France International Award, Che­nnai International Film Festival etc. I knew the film would make it at national level as well when the entire media gave a standing ovation after the premiere for the press”.

Ever since 'Vazhakku En 18/9' opened to rave reviews from critics, it was predicted that the film would win awards in the country and perhaps, even in the international circuit. As expected, the film's make-up artist Raja was awarded the National Film Award for Best Makeup Artist. It has also been judged as the Best Tamil film.

Chennai : Tamil teen crime-thriller 'Vazhakku Enn 18/9' won the best film award at the first South Asian Film Festival (SAFF) held in Paris recently.
The critically acclaimed film opened to a packed house at the event, held between Jan 16-20, and left the international audience spellbound. At the closing ceremony of the festival, it was officially awarded the best film award.

The film, directed by Balaji Sakthivel, is the story of modern day youth, whose lives are shackled by sex, lies and crime. Made on a shoe-string budget, the film starred newcomers such as Mithun Murali, Sri Urmila Mahanta and Manisha Yadav.
It was also one of the Tamil films in the run for India's Oscar entry, for best foreign language film category.
The other Tamil film also screened at the SAFF was Karthik Subbaraj's horror-thriller 'Pizza'.
Other contenders in the best film category were Ajay Bahl's 'BA Pass', Amit Ashraf's Bangladeshi film 'Udhao', Gurvinder Singh's 'Anhey Ghore Da Daan' and Nepali film 'Loot' by Nischal Basnet .
Some other Indian films were screened under a special category, which included films such as Onir's 'My Brother Nikhil', A.R Murugadoss '7 am Arivu' and Abhinay Deo's 'Delhi Belly'.
Aimed at proving that South Asian cinema is not only about Bollywood, the SAFF screened movies from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal.





Vazhakku Enn 18/9 wins 'Best Film' award at South Asian film festival, Paris

Director Balaji Sakthivel's critically acclaimed movie 'Vazhakku Enn 18/9' has won the 'Best Film' award at the South Asian Film festival (Festival du film d'Asie du Sud Transgressif) held at Paris-France. 

The film was well received by the Tamill audience and movie buffs all over the globe. The announcement of award for the film was made during the closing ceremony of the film festival.

Moreover, the film has been nominated under different categories in various other film festivals and so this is just the beginning of an international level appreciation.

Prouced by Lingusamy under Thirupathi Brothers banner, the film had new faces Sri, Mithun Murali, Dinesh, Urmila Mahanta and Manisha Yadav in the lead roles. The film's technical team had S.D. Vijay Milton for cinematography, Gopi Krishna for editing and R. Prasanna for music.
